This one is very random…
Coming home tonight from a meeting I was treated to an amazing almost full moon. It appeared larger than normal and lit up the sky. I was drawn into the details of the imperfections on its surface, guessing they are craters from meteors. Which then made me wonder how often does the moon or other planets get hit by meteors?
Here’s is what I found:
The moon is hit almost daily by things ranging from a spec of dust to a large one in 2014 that was 400kg or about 882 pounds. That is big enough to cause some damage! Especially since things aren’t slowing up to hit the moon, full force and wham! Or is it BAM! Either way -damage done.
What about the Earth? Every year, the Earth is hit by about 6100 meteors large enough to reach the ground, or about 17 every day, research has revealed. The key words “large enough” to reach the ground. Well, the majority of those will cause little to no damage.
Are there bigger ones that may cause damage? Didn’t one wipe out the dinosaurs? Yes, there are bigger ones, but something to do with our orbiting and other objects orbiting, etc. sorry – I really like science, but not enough to really understand all of the scientific explanations here. But then – what do we really know? Did a large meteor take out the dinosaurs? Good question and I am not going to deep dive here as I believe there are many attempts to explain away things that are just above my pay grade and I believe that God holds the real answers, is it / was it possible? Yes.
Other things I found:
There is just so much that happens on this planet that I can’t help but wondering “why, how, where” etc. I mean think about the things we “know.” We know that lightning can strike and burn a house to the ground yet it could strike a human being and be survived, in fact Roy Sullivan was hit by lighting 7 times – each time he lived!
How about places like Ruby Falls TN. 1120 feet down, inside a mountain is Ruby Falls, a water fall that is fed by rain water and a natural spring.
What about man flying a machine? You know, aero planes – air planes. Still doesn’t make sense, does it? That we can build these planes that might weigh up to 187,000 pounds with passengers (Boeing 737) and fly them in the sky at 460 mph – 575mph all across the world! Or building these huge cruise ships that weigh over 200,000 tons and that seemingly glide or float across the oceans. But, what do we really know?
Mankind has developed ways to cook faster, read faster, write faster. We can learn faster; we are even on the verge of driving – with out actually driving. Yes, that is right, self-driving cars!
We have uncovered many, many fossils to ancient lands and more, yet there is still so much more out there waiting to be found. There are even some tribes that been rarely “touched” or visited by current day people due to the remoteness or danger to visit.
We live in a wonderous world today that one moment you can be on the west coast of the states and within 6 hours you can fly to the east coast. TV programming, movies, etc. is available 24 hours a day along with music. You can literally reach anyone around the globe by using a cell phone or computer.
Yet we still know little about around us. Example here would be the statues on Easter Island – or more correct would be “in” Easter Island. These statues stand 13 feet tall and weigh 14 tons. They have been there sometime, since 1100 – 1400 CE and have become buried by shifting soils, yet for the longest time people only thought they were giant heads.
What do we really know? I don’t know, there is a lot in this world to be pondered, but I will share this thought – I tend to think along the lines of anything we think we “know” is barely the tip of knowing anything.
We know because of what our creator allows us to know
Thanks for stopping by the Fire,
